Cotton Grave Farm Management Welcomes Mike Koenecke
Farmers need a plan for the future, including how to grow and properly handle succession. The same can be said for Cotton Grave Farm Management.
That is why we were proud to add Mike Koenecke to our team as a Farm Manager. He joined our firm in February. Mike will play a vital role in providing a continuation plan for our customers and ensure that Cotton Grave Farm Management will continue to be a key partner for many in our community.
When the Spencer Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors visited the Cotton Grave offices in April, Mike said the new position was “a blessing,” according to the Spencer Daily Reporter.
“It’s a real honor to put my foot down and say this is my destiny,” Koenecke said.
Mike adds his experience to the 116 years of combined professional experience of our owners, John Cotton and Gary Grave.
NW Iowa roots, Education and Experience
Mike knows both northwest Iowa and the inseparable ties agriculture and farmers have with our region’s success. Mike’s roots come from a family farming history in Burt, Iowa, that spans six generations, reaching all the way back to 1898 when the farm was first established. To this day, he is active in the family’s row crop production operation.
Mike has also spent over 15 years in the retail cooperative arena through a national ag consulting firm. He received his bachelor’s degree in business management from Buena Vista University and has taken agronomy courses through Iowa State University and Northwest Iowa Community College. He attributes his most significant education to course work with the Land O Lakes Executive Agribusiness Program, which is a partnership with the Purdue University College of Agriculture.
Community Involvement is Important to Mike
At Cotton Grave Farm Management, we prize our community relationships. That’s true of Mike, too. He and John Cotton became acquainted when Mike was part of the Spencer Cardinals baseball team for nine years.
On a local level, he serves on boards of the Spencer YMCA, Spencer Youth Baseball/Softball Association and Love Takes Root, a non-profit organization that does work in Haiti.
He has previously served on the board of elders at First English Lutheran Church. Mike is also an active parent involved with Iowa Great Lakes Lutheran School Activities.
Mike is a member of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers.
Mike, his wife Katie, and their four children - Jack, Karson, Claire and Brooklyn - live on their family acreage outside of Spencer.
